Éva Richard

Éva joined Kugler Wechsler in October 2017 and was named partner in 2024. She has been practicing litigation for more than ten years and has focused her practice on class actions, personal injury, and medical, hospital, and dental liability.

She leads major class actions against the State in the fields of criminal and constitutional law, including cases involving unlawful detention, the right to vote, and rights protected under the Canadian and Quebec Charters.

Éva previously worked as a law clerk at the Quebec Court of Appeal for the Honourable Justice Allan R. Hilton from 2013 to 2015, and as an associate at a boutique civil and commercial litigation firm in Montreal from 2015 to 2017.

Before beginning her law studies, Éva worked in Ottawa for the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee, Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario. She also completed a joint honours bachelor’s degree in Communications and Philosophy.

Member, Canadian Bar Association, Quebec Division, Class Actions Section — Member of the executive committee of the group of lawyers who monitor and analyze trends in class actions in Quebec and participate in the sharing of knowledge and expertise through continuing education and leadership.

Atchom-Makoma Class Action – Over $164 million (2025) — Action brought on behalf of thousands of people who were illegally detained in Quebec without appearing before a judge within 24 hours of their arrest and detention. The judgment awarded group members more than $164 million in damages, making it the third largest award in the history of class actions in Quebec (currently on appeal).

Martin Class Action – $25 million Settlement (2025) — Action brought on behalf of thousands of people held in custody in Quebec who did not benefit from a review of their pre-trial detention, settled for $25 million to compensate group members for their damages.
